PayShap is a South African real-time interbank payment service available through participating banks. To send money, use your bank’s supported PayShap channel and pay either to the recipient’s ShapID or to their bank-account details. Successful payments normally reflect within seconds and may be available at any time, including weekends and public holidays. Fees, transaction limits and supported channels differ by bank. Confirm the displayed recipient details carefully because an authorised PayShap payment generally cannot be cancelled or reversed after it has been submitted.

What PayShap is and how it works
PayShap allows customers of participating South African banks to make real-time interbank payments. Depending on the bank and channel, a payment can be sent to:
- a registered ShapID;
- a Shap Name used by an eligible business; or
- ordinary bank-account details.
A ShapID is an alias connected to a bank account, usually based on the account holder’s verified cellphone number. The sender does not need a ShapID to make a PayShap payment, and the recipient does not need a ShapID when the payment is sent to ordinary account details.
PayShap is for domestic payments between participating South African banks. It is not an international-payment service.
Once a properly authorised payment has been submitted and successfully processed, it is normally made available to the recipient in real time. Processing can still be affected by fraud controls, bank availability, incorrect details or service interruptions.
Which banks support PayShap?
PayShap is available through a growing number of participating South African banks. Current participants include major banks such as Absa, Capitec, Discovery Bank, FNB, Investec, Nedbank, Standard Bank and GoTyme Bank (formerly TymeBank), as well as several other participating institutions.
Participation, supported channels and available PayShap features can change. Check the official PayShap website and your own bank before relying on a particular feature.
How to send money with PayShap
- Sign in through a PayShap channel supported by your bank. This is commonly the banking app, although some banks also support online banking or cellphone banking.
- Choose PayShap or the bank’s real-time payment option.
- Select whether you are paying a ShapID, Shap Name or ordinary bank account.
- Enter the recipient information and payment amount.
- Review the displayed recipient or “known-as” name, selected bank, amount and reference.
- Confirm the payment only when all details are correct.
- Keep the transaction reference and check the payment status in your own banking channel.
What is a ShapID and how do I register one?
A ShapID is an alias linked to a bank account. For an individual, it is usually based on the verified cellphone number recorded on the banking profile.
A cellphone number can normally be registered as the primary or default ShapID at only one participating bank at a time. Some banks may also provide a bank-specific ShapID containing a suffix, such as cellphonenumber@bank.
Registration steps differ by bank. Use your bank’s official PayShap settings or registration section, select the account to link, and confirm the “known-as” name or other details shown.
You do not need to register a ShapID merely to send a PayShap payment. You may also be able to receive a PayShap payment through ordinary account details when the participating banks support that option.
Requesting money with PayShap
PayShap Request allows a user to send another person a payment request through participating banking channels. The payer can review, approve or decline the request. A request does not itself transfer money and is not proof that payment has been made.
Before approving a request, check:
- who sent it;
- the displayed recipient details;
- the requested amount;
- the reason or reference; and
- whether you were expecting the request.
Once an approved request results in a payment, the normal PayShap payment rules apply. Availability, expiry periods, cancellation options and limits differ by bank.
PayShap limits and fees
PayShap transaction limits are set by each participating bank and may also depend on:
- the banking channel;
- the account type;
- the customer’s payment profile;
- the bank’s daily payment limit; and
- whether the transaction is a payment or a PayShap Request.
There is no single limit that can safely be applied to every bank. For example, some banks support limits substantially above the original PayShap launch amounts, while others still publish lower channel-specific limits.
Fees also differ by bank, account package, amount and payment method. Some banks include certain PayShap payments at no charge, while others charge a fixed or value-based fee.
Check the amount and fee displayed in your banking channel before confirming the transaction.
Stay safe: Use only your bank’s official app, website, cellphone-banking channel or verified support number. Never disclose your banking PIN, password or OTP to another person. Review the displayed recipient, bank, amount and reference before approving a payment. Do not approve an unexpected PayShap Request. If a payment or request appears suspicious, decline it and contact your bank through an independently verified channel.
Troubleshooting PayShap
- The PayShap option is missing: Your bank, account type or current banking channel may not support PayShap. Update the banking app and check the bank’s official PayShap information.
- The payment did not go through: Check that both banks participate in PayShap, confirm the account or ShapID details, check your transaction limit and review any error message in the bank’s channel.
- The recipient has not received the money: Check the transaction status in your own banking app. Do not send a duplicate payment merely because the recipient says it has not arrived. Contact your bank with the payment reference if the transaction shows successful but has not reflected.
- I paid the wrong person: Contact your bank immediately. An authorised PayShap payment generally cannot be cancelled or reversed through the ordinary payment-reversal process. The bank may try to assist with recovery, but recovery is not guaranteed and may require the recipient to return the funds voluntarily.
- My ShapID will not register: Confirm that the cellphone number is verified on your banking profile. If it is already the primary ShapID at another bank, you may need to deregister or move the primary ShapID. A bank-suffixed ShapID may still be available, depending on the bank.
- I received an unexpected payment request: Do not approve it. Decline or ignore the request and report suspicious activity to your bank through an official channel.
Frequently asked questions
How fast is a PayShap payment?
A successful PayShap payment normally reflects within seconds and may be available 24 hours a day, including weekends and public holidays. Bank availability, fraud checks, incorrect details or technical interruptions can still delay or prevent a payment.
What is a ShapID?
A ShapID is an alias linked to a bank account, usually based on the verified cellphone number on the customer’s banking profile. A cellphone number can normally be the primary ShapID at only one participating bank, although some banks may also offer a bank-suffixed ShapID.
How much does PayShap cost?
Fees are set by each bank and may depend on the account, amount, channel or payment type. Some banks include certain PayShap payments at no charge, while others charge a fixed or value-based fee. Review the fee shown by your bank before confirming.
Can I reverse a PayShap payment?
An authorised PayShap payment generally cannot be cancelled or reversed after it has been submitted. Contact your bank immediately if you paid the wrong person or suspect fraud.
