Universal Branch Codes South Africa: Updated Bank Code List

Many South African banks provide a universal branch code for electronic payments. For the banks listed below, this code can generally be used instead of searching for the code of the branch where the account was opened.

Always use the banking details supplied by the account holder or shown on their official bank confirmation letter.

How to use a universal branch code

When you add a beneficiary in your banking app or website, enter the recipient’s account number and the universal branch code for their bank from the table above. Most banking apps fill in the branch code automatically once you select the bank, so you often do not need to type it yourself.

Before you submit the payment

  • Confirm the recipient’s full name.
  • Check the bank and account number.
  • Select the correct account type.
  • Enter the bank’s universal code, or the specific code supplied by the recipient.
  • Use account-holder verification when your banking app offers it.
  • Send a small test payment before transferring a large amount to a new beneficiary.

Some banks, such as Standard Bank, offer account verification to check whether an account exists and whether the supplied name matches the account holder.

Frequently asked questions

What if I entered the wrong branch code?

Do not assume that the payment will automatically be rejected or returned. Check the payment status and contact your bank immediately if you entered incorrect beneficiary details. The bank may be able to request a payment recall, but recovery is not guaranteed once the funds have reached another account. Before paying, confirm the recipient’s bank, account number, account type and branch code using a bank confirmation letter or details obtained directly from the recipient.

Why do banks provide universal branch codes?

A universal branch code gives customers one standard code to use for electronic payments to accounts at that bank. This makes beneficiary setup easier and reduces the need to search for an individual branch’s code.
